Grief and BereavementGrief is a loss of what is familiar.  It is a loss of the old way of living.Grief can result from a variety of losses, such as: • Death of a loved one • Anticipated loss of a loved one (e.g. cancer, addictions) • Divorce/Separation • Loss of positive expectations for ourselves or our loved ones • Loss of a job • Loss of a pet • Relocation • Changing jobs • Moving • Loss of financial security • Infertility • Illness, or • Many other life changing eventsThough we don’t always recognize some of these as valid reasons for grief, and try to “tough them out,” it can be healing and productive to deal with the emotions and find a way to work through them.Whatever your situation, your grief is real, and your loss is important.  At times, you need the help of others to assist you through the grief or bereavement process.  Gateway is trained and certified in grief and bereavement counseling.  We can help you adjust and learn how to fully function in your new life experience.

  • Loss Due to Addiction

It is difficult to lose a loved one but coping with the loss associated with substance abuse becomes more difficult because of the social stigma attached to it. Too often the survivors feel they are being judged or stared out as unfit family members or friends.

In addition to providing individual grief counseling, Gateway offers a peer support group meeting that is professionally run by a licensed counselor specifically for those who lost a loved one from drugs and/or alcohol. Group members find comfort being with others who understand the unique challenges associated with this kind of loss.  Group members are not clients of the practice. The meetings are open to the public but members must call to register due to space limitations.  We are happy to provide this much needed service to the community.

If individuals wish private grief therapy sessions, Gateway can provide this service, with standard applicable fees

  • Individual and Family Grief and Bereavement Counseling

Grief and bereavement affect all of us at sometime. It is important to “feel the feelings”  of the loss and learn new coping skills to continue to live a healthy lifestyle. Losses can be for many reasons:

    Death of a loved one

Anticipated death of a love one

    Loss of a relationship

    Death of a pet

    Loss/change of job

    Loss of health

    Loss of financial security

    Moving

It can be difficult to manage these feelings on your own. We are certified by the Association Death Education and Counseling in Thanatology Counseling (also known as grief and bereavement counseling). We can help you not to forget your loss but to live your life productively, while acknowledging the loss.
